During our stay on Gozo, we met a very interesting character! Gregory the harmonica loving, taxi driving, Elvis fan was such a riot! We met him at the large church in the city center to go on our day boat excursion. When we got to the church, Gregory was there waiting for us with his Maltese music blasting from the cab! He was blasting it so loud that the people from the church came out to see what all the noise was.
Before getting into the taxi, Gregory told us of his love for harmonicas. He has a collection of over 270 different harmonicas from various countries. He gave us his card and asked if we would send him one from the United States when we returned home. Then he played a song for us. He was quite good! He also told us how much he loves Elvis. He even has a picture of him on the underside of his sun visor. We started our journey to the dock weaving in and out of traffic while he played us music from the plugin amplifier he had in the cab. This was a very interesting experience. We learned he had been a police officer most of his life and was now retired, driving the cab for extra cash.
When he dropped us off at the boat dock he offered to pick us back up and take us back to our apartment when our tour was done. We gladly accepted his offer! On our way back, I asked him where I could find a spicy goat cheese I had tried on the island. He took us to a grocery store, dropped us for a few minutes and was back to take us home in 20 minutes. During that time, he went and rescued some people who we saw stranded on the side of the road (what a great taxi driver)! As a thank you to us, he purchased us some Maltese beer and we drank them in the cab on the way back to the house together.
As we were leaving the next day, we asked him if he would come to take us to the ferry for one last ride. He gladly accepted and was there right on time with more Maltese music waiting for us. It was a great experience and we learned a lot from him about Maltese culture and fun! We couldn’t have asked for a better taxi driver. Now, all we need to figure out is how to get the guy a harmonica!!
